View Full Version : High idle temp

Hey guys, another uber newber question here. Have finally started the adventure of tuning the engine of my Losi Nitro Ten-T truggy. Read up on how to do it properly in my manual, looking for all the signs of running too rich or lean. So far, have had no probs with no smoke, smoke too thick, or the engine hesitating.
However, after I've gotten the car warmed up from a few minutes of running, I notice that it gets a bit hot when resting at idle. The manual recommends keeping the temps at 190-230F (the telemetry temp probe is wrapped around the head). At fast running speeds, temp is fantastic even after I have been leaning it out, usually 170-200F. However, at idle, it's hitting 250-266F. But this is the only sign of lean settings that I have seen. On take off, there is no hesitation and a nice puff of white smoke.
The temps do concern me a little though. My thought is, should I richen my low rpm screw? I don't think it's the idle screw, since the engine isn't idling too fast, and only creeps forward very slowly after bringing the car to a stop.

Just some thoughts here:
First off, your RC Car should not move at all at idle... The idle is too high, or you have a clutch spring broken... If you have to hold the break to get it to stay in one place, then you have again; your idle too high, or the clutch is broken and is not engaging.......
Both of these will cause the engine to run at high temps when sitting still.... A combination of both will certainly cause it to heat up whne sitting still because it is putting undue, and un-necessary strain on the engine....
Check both, and remember, you should have to hit the breaks to keep it still unless it is on a hill... If you get these things rung out, you will most likely not have anymore issues...
Best wishes, and have fun!

Make sure your idle gap is set correctly. Check this by removing your breather assembly, remove the venturi. Look in the carb and make sure the gap is about the same thickness as a credit card or around 1 mm. If that is correct, put the venturi back in the carb. Put your air filter assembly back on the carb. If you still have a high idle, and it calms down when you hit your brakes, check to see if you need to add dead band in your throttle linkage. To do this, look at the throttle linkage that attaches to the carb. Then with your radio on and the vehicle on, push your brakes with the trigger. If your carb goes in when you apply break and then the carb pull's out a little when you go back to center, then your deadband is to tight. losen the set screw in the barrel on the outside of the throttle linkage and let the return spring push the carb where it needs to be. After the carb sets itself, tighten the set screw back up and you will be good if your engine is in tune.

I would say you may have the low end needle a bit on the lean side... Although you must understand a new engine with lots of pinch will also generate heat at idle.... Try to richen the low end needle a 12th of a turn, and turn the idle down a bit.... The car should not move when at idle (without holding the brakes)... That resistance being created by the clutch rubbing at idle will bring up you temp quickly......
I hope this helps some. Keep those temp down... 230-250 is max if you want you engine to last for a long time... As well as make sure you rotate the crank and put your piston at the bottom of the sleeve after every run... As well, make sure you do not put the vehicle away with any fuel in it, as it will gel up and cause issues...
Best wishes

richen up the bottom end till you have a slight bog from a dead stop then lean out the top end when you have a slight bog on the bottom your idle temp will go down . I had the same problem until the number 1 guy in the glorcs series Dave Henery helped me out
