View Full Version : Small tanks and run times?

I have a Losi LST2 and love the thing. I also have a Revo 3.3 and love it too, but the run times are much shorter than the LST2. I love the huge tank for bashing. I would like to try a buggy, but I suspect that the small tanks in them would drive me nuts and that I would always be refueling it. What kind of run times are you getting with your buggies? Can you put in bigger tanks.
I would like to get a bashing buggy with a roto-start, maybe a Turmoil RTR or Losi 8ight RTR, but I am concerned about short run times.

Run times are around 8min. And that depends on alot of things like: the engine, how you have it tuned, how hard you run it, and yes the size of the tank.
Id say yes on the bigger tank mod to a buggy. Just a little custom fabrication and its in. You will love the instant power and speed of a buggy too! Good luck!

I can get around 7 minutes if I push it but the Kyosho ST-R fuel tank drops right into most if not all Kyosho buggies.

The STR tank is only 150cc, (145 technically, you use fuel line and filters to make up the extra 5cc to get the max limit), if youre looking for looooooong runtimes, try and find a bigger tank. You may have to get creative to fit a huge tank...like put the tank where the rx box is and the rx box where the tank is....it might be worth a try.

Thats a good idea.

Welcome to the forum pmcderm993.
I use to have a REVO 2.5R and with the standard tank I was making around 18 minutes run time. Recently sold it and bought a K3 MP.5 but still haven't ran the buggy yet. If you aren't going to race you could just put a bigger tank on.

Why do they limit the size of the tank for racing? It seems that too much fuel would cause a weight increase and be a disadvantage rather than an advantage. Why even set a limit?
Years ago I tried electric planes, but the short run times drove me nuts and I went back to glow fuel. However, with the new lipo batteries I now have a conventional wood plane (mini ultra stick) that can fly vertical, yet still run at least 10 minutes. To me running anything RC for less than ten minutes is a waste of time.
In boat racing we don't have a tank size restriction.

I've never seen a boat race. What happens if you run out of fuel and you are in the middle of the river?

They want it to be fair. If a bunch of people modded their tanks in their car and were getting 10-12 minutes you wouldn't think it was fair. But for club racing no one really checks only at big races like ROAR, RC Pro, etc.

I think I am missing something here. What good (or harm) is a 10-12 minute run-time in a 5 minute race? Aren't the 1/8th buggy races limited to five minutes? So what if someone has extra fuel. I would think that would be a disadvantage. Like I said, I'm missing something here.

in that case it dont matter in a 5min run. But most places or big races they run much longer and have to pit. Well if you get 5min and i get 12min runtimes and we are racing a 30 main. you will have to pit 5 times and i will pit only 3.

And that is what I'm trying to say. At club races no one is really going to care but, at big events when the run 15+ minute Mains it is going to be an unfair advantage for you over the other guys who only get 5 minutes because, they will have to spend more time in the pits then you.

The qualifiers are usually 5-7 minutes. Mains are anywhere from 10-60 min. The 125cc limit keeps everyone on a somewhat level playing field.

Thanks, I didn't know that the mains were so long. We don't pit the boats during races--just five or six laps--thats it. We would run maybe 3 or 4 classes with 3 or for heats during a day.
I might just buy a Turmoil RTR buggy just try out the buggy thing to see what it is like. They look like a lot of fun. I don't know that I want to wait for the Losi 8ight RTR, plus it will probably be $100 more than the Turmoil.
I really don't know what this whole Truggy Muggy thing is about--either get a buggy or a monster truck--my two cents. Better yet get a buggy and a monster truck!

truggies rock. fast, fun and more durable. i used to race monster truck for years but was annoyed by the amount of mods i had to do to make simple changes in the suspension etc... truggies on the other hand are way more adjustable, faster, and far more competitive. at our local tracks most laps are close to that of 1/8th scale.

I was thinking I get around 10min but I also let it cool between runs, have a snack or a beer, maybe setup a jump or look for a new spot to run, give the car a look over.

I Don't know how is where you race but where I live we have 5min qualifiers, 20min preliminary and 45min mains. So that extra runtime does count.
