I’ve been running my 8ight for about a week now and have noticed a lot of flex front to back in the rear of the buggy. It’s cracked the back of the body all up. In the options list that came with the kit it says they have aluminum pieces available but the LHS does not have them yet. The buggy handles great on our high traction track and I am able to easily do the triple that other buggy’s have trouble with. Also the front has already developed some slop in the spindles, But alum ones are also in the options list. Nothing has broken but I haven’t wrecked it hard yet either.
This weekend will be it's 1st race.

Thanks,
Yes Derek has been racing 8th scale for 3 years now.
He just recently signed with Team Losi and has several other sponsors as well.
Do a google search on him and you will find quite a bit of info on him.
RC Car Action Magazine did a small article on him in the November issue.

Thats pretty sweet.

We have a 8yr old at our track, the Tan Man, who is sponsored by Jammin, Team Associated, Ace Hobby, Dewinter Sign and Vinyl, and Upgrade R/C. And let me just tell you he can drive! There's a 3 page article of about him Xtreme RC page 134. I think he's the youngest sponsored driver out there.

Derek started racing oval at age 4 and got into offroad at age 8.
He truely loves the hobby as I do.
If you go to the bigger races you will see these kids getting started early and getting fast at a very young age.
Derek made the "C" main at the 8th scale Nationals this summer while driving for Sportwerks and probably could have been in the "B" if it weren't for a few motor issues. Gil Losi JR watched him run a few qualifiers and he and Adam Drake gave us a great oppertunity. Derek currently drives for Team Losi, JR Radios, Dynamite, Blue Thunder, Panther Tires, Tony's Screws, King Headz, Howie Graffix, and Hardesty Raceway. Without the help from these companies he wouldn't be near where he is now.

Here's another update on my 8ight. I broke a front spindle carrier this past weekend in the a-main but that's the only thing that has broken. Love the car feels like an electric out on the track.

Would like to hear from others how there 8ight is working out, is there any problems that have come up? For me I have had 3 parts go south, 2 shock shafts and a front L spindle carrier. But for 3.5 gal of fuel my problems have been minor and I really like the buggy.

Ive been keeping up with the Losi thread on the grid, and a small issue guys are having is spring coil bind on the throttle linkage when the brakes are applied, which ends up stressing the servo and before you know it, your servo is smoked.

When you apply full brake, you should be able to pull on the throt. linkage rod and pull it out a little...its a easy fix though, just cut a couple of coils off the spring.

I also have an 8ight and think it's the best 1/8 buggy I've had yet. After 3 years racing and 7 other prior 1/8 scales it has been the best handling and most durable. After 2.5 gallons on it I have yet to break anything. If there's anything I could complain about it would be the fact that the clutch shoes wear extremely quickly. The larger 5x13 bearing seems to last longer than the standard 5x10's ever did in my other cars. So far the only mains I haven't won were as a result of a flame out. I love it! :winner:

Here is a comparison between my Losi and my Kyosho. At my local track last week the owner had the lap counting system up and running so we could get lap times. I took this opportunity to compare the 2 buggy’s, both buggy’s are set up nicely for the track. avg lap time with the Kyosho was 36.3 and with the Losi 35.1. With the Losi I seem to be able to carry a little more corner speed through some of the tighter corner’s and am able to clear the larger jumps more easily. Both cars are great on the track and I am able to consistently finish in the top 5 in the A-main.

Is there any chance dallen you can measure you long, diameter etc. you front and rear shocks are as I want to see if they can fit on my buggy

Cheers

dallen
11-27-2006, 01:36 PM
I do not have a set of calipers to measure the diameter of the shocks. But I did compare them to my sp2. They are about the same length but the diameter is way bigger. I test fitted one on the front of my sp2 and it did not fit quite right but I think with a little work you could make them fit.

RC_KAOS
11-27-2006, 02:16 PM
Sweet, thanks. How much work would be required? Were they hitting the shock tower which is why they didn't fit right?

Hey dallen, how many throttle servos have you broken with your 8ight?

Cheers

dallen
12-29-2006, 03:12 PM
I fried one JR Z9000S digital servo then replaced it with a JR Z4800S analog servo and have had no problems sense.

RC_KAOS
12-29-2006, 03:58 PM
So you have to run analog servos to fix the problem or it can happen with any servo, just takes time?

Cheers

AZRCaddict
12-29-2006, 04:35 PM
It can happen with any servo, but digital throttle servos burn out quicker because they can't take the heat and fry up.

I think it is partially the car that is frying them and partially not having them set up right. Here are top quotes and tips from Team Losi driver Casey Peck:

"check the center diff brace...if it is tightened too far the rear brake can drag. I run mine pretty loose and make sure the brake rods move real free."

"this is why I run analog servos for throttle....ever since smoking a digital in my old ttr car I have run analog. I personaly don't think they can handle the abuse of 1/8th scale.

sorry to hear about your troubles Brett....but please don't do like everyone else and throw another servo at it with out looking at everything again and possibly changing somthing.....

possible servo killers..."applys to all cars"

1. cheap switch with small wire(needs to be at least as big as servo lead)
2. end points too far....small track's will require way more brake action =
more heat.
3. car left on especially, with spektrum....if the fail safe is not set properly
you can smoke a servo.
4. old engines with sticky slides will add more stress on the servo
5. make sure to set your end points with your dual rate maxed out....
if you set your epa correctly, only to add more brake pull with the DR, you
are then pulling the servo past its correct end points.

Like I said before this is not directed to anyone particular, but to every one to think about.

I know you guys know what you are doing but some times the obvious is over looked."

scoobie
12-29-2006, 08:26 PM
Tons of guys on the grid say its the spring on the throttle linkage causing the servo to bind when full brake is applied. The spring cant compress any more, but the servo keeps pushing it, leading to servo failure (digi or analog). To check it, apply full brake, then pull on the throttle linkage rod. You should be able to pull it out a little, if you cant then you need to cut a couple of loops off of the spring or readjust the linkage so that the spring doesnt bottom out when you hit full brake...its easier to cut it though.

dallen
01-12-2007, 06:07 PM
Yea instead of cutting the spring I took of some material from the rod end and it seemed to do the trick. I was also told not to use the digital servos on the throttle by a rep at Hitec a few years back (he didn’t really give a good explanation why). Overall I have had a really good experience with the 8ight the only thing I have had to replace on a regular basis besides the normal clutch and bearings is the front c-hubs which I think is due to the fact that it uses a camber link instead of a upper arm so there is more stress put on it and it develops slop after a while. I can’t wait to see the new A.E. RC8 and how they went about setting up that buggy.

dallen

Here is a report on what I have gone through as far as parts in the 6 months I have been practicing and racing my Losi.
Broken parts
2-front shock shafts
4-shock rod ends
1-throttle servo
1-rear hinge pin arm mount
4-hinge pin retaining covers
Normal wear parts replaced
1-front drive shaft
1set-front spindles
1set-front spindle carriers
I feel this is about average or above for a 1/8 buggy. A total cost for all parts replaced is below 100.00 with exception of the servo. All in all I am very happy with this buggy and it reinforces my trust in a Team Losi product.

This thing freakin' rocks.
I have been putting the final touches on the break in of my STS .21T engine, and ended up putting 5 or 6 tanks through it today. Best fun I've ever had with my clothes on. I didn't find the buggy as hard to drive as many has said it would be. Be I wasn't pushing it that hard, since the engine is still kinda tight.
Here's some shots pre and post cleaning.........Yeah I clean my cars.
