I want to purchase a car for my husband for his birthday. My problem is I don't know anything about them and I want to surprise him. If anyone could please give me some suggestions on which ones are better. I know that speed, durability and off road will be important. This will be his first car and I want to make sure that it is good. Advice is needed. Thank you!

If it is going to be his first one I'd go to a local hobby
shop and see what kind of vehicles they carry and buy something from them that they have parts for. Make sre to stick with a NAME BRAND ( Associated, Traxxas, Druatrax) or something along those lines. Traxxas is the number 1 seller of ready to run Radio Control Vehicles. A Traxxas Slash would probably be something good for him as they are very popular everywhere and you could be set-up ready to go for less than $300.
This is just my opinion and every one hads there own.

With the kind of money we have in our race cars, it is probably something you should do with him instead of suprising him. Or like Dave said you can't go wrong with a Traxxas Slash, we race these bone stock as they come out of the box and they are a blast.
Find a local race track and take him there

you need to find out what he likes as in offroad/onroad etc , then talk to the guys here from your local area ,theres plenty of them here on this forum , i would start with something that has plenty of parts availability , like dave said the traxxas slash is common and very popular now , or if wants nitro then i would suggest , losi, associated,or mugen

money wise are you looking to spend a little or alot.
will he be bashing (playing in the yard) or racing.
that has alot to do with it.yes i would stick with a name brand if he plans to do any racing. such as losi, ofna, mugen or associated.me i recommend a losi 8 rtr (ready to run) they have everything uoi need minus battery and fuel..
oh and zipper whats wrong with her surprising him.. my wife surprised me last year with a losi 8 and a m11 radio

He will be bashing. I want to spend less than 600.00. When he goes back to Afghanistan he may take it with him. I want something that will hold up in the sand, etc. I really appriciate all of the responses. Thank you.

I too would also do the SLASH! Nitro over there would/could be a bad thing. Especially for a "newbie" as far as tuning for the climate. With the Slash, (electric!), he and/or all of his friends could be able to charge a battery pack, & run it! I also hear they make Hummer bodies that will fit a Slash!

My recommendation would be something in between the slash and the summit. The slash is very dependable and good for some bashing but has problems in high grass & rocks are almost out of the question. The summit would be a great all around vehicle but you are paying for alot of technology that he may not need and is on the higher end of your budget after batteries and charger. I would look at the electric 4wd monster trucks. In particular the new HPI Crawler King. For less maintenance and higher speeds the 2wd Stampede VXL by Traxxas would be a good choice it is very durable and would be less effected by the sand than the others.

Naaa......... anything strickly crawler would be to slow and boring and there is nothing 2wd worthy for bashing. Summit the best of both worlds............But Id go Nitro and buy a Tmaxx or Revo for a true basher. For bashing the bigger, the badder, the better .

Revo's ROCK, wish I had kept mine just to bash around the house with. It was all hopped up with the Tekno 1\8 stuff.

Pretty sure its not a true rock crawler, still has the same higher speed motor as the Wheely King. They left that for you to do if you want to crawl. If your bashing on the cheap, you can't beat 2wd monster truck wheely's imo.
Just looked it up, Ron your right it does have a crawler specific motor, but it is not yet geared for true rock crawling

IMO the Summit is too slow in stock form. It has some cool features, but not necessarily something that could truely be appreciated by a begginer. The Traxxas E-Revo 16.8V RTR Monster Truck (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_44_1257/products_id/25769/n/Traxxas-E-Revo-168V-RTR-Monster-Truck) with a two of these (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/products_id/145630/n/ProTek-R-C-6-Cell-72V-NiMH-Speed-Battery-Pack-w-Traxxas-Connector-4200mAh) batteries and two of these (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_221_116/products_id/34580/n/Traxxas-EZ-Peak-Charger-w--Traxxas-High-Current-Connector) chargers comes out to 563.95 and with a $25 off coupon, you will be in for less than $550 for a killer electric MT that will thrill the hell out of him.:rctruck:
Then when budget allows, he can upgrade to a better quality 7 cell pack for more speed and power...then he can upgrade to a brushless esc/motor setup and lipo packs...then he can upgrade the radio and servos...then you will wish you never bought him a RC Car :)
