I know we discussed ceramics in engines and seen that they make a improvement but what about ceramics in the diffs and wheel hubs? Anyone run ceramic bearings on a car chassis?

Ive done just the diffs/pinions, and Ive also done the entire car on two seperate occasions. Ceramics are lighter, and provide a slight amount of reduced drag, but whether or not they provide any real performance advantage is debatable.
Both times I did the bearing swaps, I made so many other drastic changes I honestly couldnt tell you if they would make a difference all by themselfs...

Ceramic would be great if you got the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Too expensive to deck out an entire vehicle for me. I think regular bearings do good enough for the price.

If they are better than a regular bearing in some places wouldn't they be better in all the places? It's just money! Avid has ceramic for $5 each and regular for $1 each, I am sure ceramic will outlast a regular steel BB, don't know about 5to1, It's only 18 BB's in an 1/8 scale counting the clutchbell.
Plus 4 more in the steering rack, so it's 22. $110 for a full set. That's like dinner, movie and icecream after. Or just dinner if you go to Troutdale here in Bristol(I will never go again)
Anyway it is a lot of money but how much do you already have in your ride?
1200-1500 for a race ready top-teir buggy and engine with good servos, and that's not counting GOOD transmitter and rec, 4PK's are what $400 or more.Anyway $110 compared to $22

Ceramic, its lighter, smoother, stiffer, harder, corrosion resistant, and electrically resistant. Ceramic bearings dissipate heat quickly, reducing friction and wear while maintaining a precision smooth surface.
Are they worth it, Ill prolly never know. I maintenance my bearings pretty frequent and I dont think I could bring my self to drop a 100 bucks on bearings..........

Yes but, what if the last 5 times longer, then the money would be the same and the performance would be better! I maintain my bearings too, clean inspect and oil after everydays race, and throw away at 1st signs of anything the least bit wrong.

I hear ya Joe, but you still gotta maintenance though.
If I bought 100 dollars worth of our favorite $1 bearings I could just throw them away and not have to maintenance nothing and have enough to re bearing the car 5 times. (I still wouldnt throw them away if they were smooth though):blbl:.
I guess it one of them things that you just gotta go for and try and be your own witness to see if they are better. SO.......let us know how they do?:D

That vid prove's nothing, I can show you how to get a steel bearing to spin like that.

I talked to boca bearings and i think they are gonna be kind enough to send me a full set of ceramics for the GTP to test out. Ill take pictures and write up a review of my impressions. I hear they have some of the best bearings out there.

INSTEAD OF REPLACING ALL OF THEM JUST REPLACE THE ONES YOU SEE THE MOST WEAR IN WITH THE CERAMIC AND SEE HOW LONG THEY LAST. THAT MIGHT HELP YOU DICIDE IF THEY ARE WORTH THE $$$$$$$.IF THEY LAST 5-10 TIMES LONGER I WOULD INVEST IN THEM.

How many people here actually maintain their bearings? I bought the RPM Bearing Blaster but it is still sitting in the packet

Like I said I clean inspect and reoil mine after every day of racing, and replace at 1st sign of anything wrong

I clean our's after every race in a sonic cleaner and re-lube but not with oil

I use sonic bearing oil, or soak them in Marvel Mystery oil overnight and then blow out the rest with a compressor. But just a drop of Sonic oil is unreal how it works. But I usually only clean them 2 or 3 times and toss'em and replace with new ones. I tried light grease, but didn't like it at all

I use no oil, it just attracks dust

I have to be honest, when i raced every weekend i never maintained my bearings. The only ones i would keep a watch on was the clutch bell bearings.

i dnt know if i should oil my bearing as yess they do attract dust... but should i oil my bearing or just soak them in petrol is also what i do (unleaded petrol/gas)

I have never done bearing maintenance.
That's the beauty of cheap bearings(as compared to ceramic ) , at the first sign of wear, or even if there is no signs of wear and you just get suspicious: chuck them in the trash and replace.
If I bought ceramics I would not maintain them either, just to lazy. That's why I like regular bearings.
P.S. - I like HPI HIGH's idea above..... somebody do that and let us know !

best place to test a bearing is in the clutch bell.
If it last five times longer there, then they are worth it.
Then the next best place will be the hubs. Thats the first bearings I notice getting gritty. For me the pinions and diff bearing always last longer and are the ones that never need anything.

clutch bell defanetly!!!...the hubs get gritty as they can get alot of dirt in there as there on the wheels...but i think im going to stick to the normal bearings!!!
but would love to see someone do the test that we are tlking about!!!

I just installed a full set of acer pro bearings in my D8 , plan on racing it this spring at my local track http://www.dirtburners.org/images/Gallery062907/index.html
I always believe in quality bearings.
