I was looking at getting into the hobby by selling off my airplane stuff. I am looking at the traxxas nitro rustler or the ofna ultra mbx comp. Which one would you guys recommend of the two or is there something out there that I have overlooked in the same price range?
Thanks in advance for your replies!

But out of those two, I say go for the buggy

My nephew has the nitro rustler and has a problem with the rear shock tower breaking. Granted I do not know how this 15 year old jumps it but he said that he has broken at least two towers since he got it for Christmas.
What you get depends on what you want to do. bash or race. Either way you will enjoy staying on the ground because when you crash you can usually keep going instead picking up the pieces and going home to make repairs.

Thanks for the replies I think I will go for the ofna! and Bonner I know exactly what you mean by quitting to go make repairs!! it ruins the day I can assure you that!. After doing more research I notice that the ofna buggy comes stock with better upgrades than the rustler mainly it has full bearings rarther than the partial bearings and bushing combination! amongst other things!! Let me know if there is anything else I should plan getting while getting into this end of the RC world!

the NR breaks alot of rear towers, but the upgrades and hop ups are unimaginable.

I like the rustler for its additional ground clearance however I cant dump a whole lot of extra cash into it to be able to keep it up and running I just want to go stock for a while until I A. know I will be in it for the long haul and B. I am a better driver to be able to handle the upgrades which in turn increase the speed and handling of the buggies. The A part of the equation will probably be a no brainer since I like all things powerful and fast!!

I also found a lead on a Jato 3.3 RTR for $360.00 shipped this would be a screamer it looks like close to 60 MPH!! think this would be too much for a beginner in the nitro field? I have had many electric rc 10's in the past late 80's into the early 90's but nothing this radical!

Alot of people like the jato too. They are fast but the buggy big block is nice too.
Oh Welcome to the community! :winner:

Hey FatCat1 the biggest thing to keep in mind is parts avaibility. All three of the cars youv'e mentioned are nice. But a nice car is a shelf queen if you have trouble getting parts. Check your nearest hobby store or online and see what they carry as far as car's. If they hold race's around by where you live, check out a race and see what everybody drives.

A 1/10 Truck and 1/8 Buggy are two completly different kits. 1/10 is more challenging to drive but 1/8 kits are strongest kits out there.

Does he keep buying the Traxxas Shock Tower?

+1 on that. ^^^^^^^^^^^
If you want to race : 1/8 buggy or truggy is top of the game!
If you are not into competitive racing ( big $ can be spent there ) then you have tons of options available to you.
I would not recomend any brand of 1/10 gas truck, if you want to just play, and want 1/10 scale, stay electric with the rustler VXL or similar, they have eye popping speed, guaranteed to impress all look-e-lou's .
If you want gas, there is no reason to be 1/10 scale IMO - you can get a 1/8 buggy or truggy for relatively the same $ (entry level ) that will do everything the 1/10 will do only bigger and better and much tougher.
Sorry all 1/10 stadium truck owners out there  I don't dis ... there is a place for that class in the racing scene and I am all for that, much skill displayed there, but to bash - 1/8 takes cake and eats it!
For nitro burning, non racing action, have a look at the Monster Trucks available, or the CRT .5 for a fun "little" speed demon, and pay attension to parts availability as dirtovalonly had mentioned. Even though he's dizzy from going round and round all the time :D he makes one of the best points I think.
I have seen some totally awesome Monster Trucks ( such as the CEN GENESIS - this thing is absolutely HUGE!! ) but where are you going to get parts? Maybe you don't ever need parts ?
Well.... that's my 2 cents.
