Hey all : perhaps this topic has been discussed before but lets start again.
I'm thinking about getting a new starter box for 1/8 buggy.
I have been using OFNA's big single direct drive motor and like that set up.
OFN92501 (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_23_52/products_id/6794) OFNA 12 Volt Starter Box Motor (for 10250) (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_23_52/products_id/6794) .
on a super old box from way back in the day.
This thing is huge, and weighs a ton, with the 12v battery, and I'm getting sick of lugging it around. :shoot:
I'm not a big fan of 2 small motors and belt drive design. Too many parts to wear out and fail IMAO.
I plan to run Lipo packs and Dean's connectors.
What all do you folks recommend?
I'm looking at the Himoto box cause it's super cheap. Even though it has had terrible reviews. I think that folks who have slammed it just --- " can't git right " . ( or maybe it really does suck ? ) never the less........
I can get one and even buy two 775 motors for around the same price as an OFNA box - chrome top or similar. ( not sure if the pinion gears will work with Himoto belt, but I can try and work that out ) Himoto box is getting a verbal thrashing because it comes with 2 550 motors and everyone says it's too weak - yet the Kyosho Universal Box comes with 2 550 motors , as many others do, and people are saying its killer , tons of power to start any motor. So what's the deal here ?
Anyway, I do like the idea of using a power panel w/glow igniter set up, so I don't have as much stuff laying about my pit table.
SO - who uses what ? what do you like ? what do you hate ? what would you recommend ?

i had the dynamite ready start box first it was a good box but i didnt really like it it wasnt wide enough to line up 1/8 buggys. i got a chrome top after that it starts anything and has the balls to do it no problem my mainproblem is the size and its a pain to setup. i just got the mugen box 2 weeks ago and wow im never looking back its small compacet and doesnt weight a ton i used it to break in my vspec and its the best box ive owned:winner:

Well, i had a chrome top ofna with the big motor u are using and it was a super nice box but heavy. I sold it and got a mugen box. Its way lighter but does not have near the power of the chrome top. I do like my mugen though. I think its a trade off. powerful and heavy. Light and weaker.

I have the OFNA 10244 Truggy starter box. It has two 775 motors and a nice kick to it. I use it for breaking in engines to save undue wear on my Losi box.

Like NeoBart, I'm using the OFNA 10244 Truggy starter box for both my truggy and buggy. In one of them, I'm using 5 year old 3300 Nimh packs and it has plenty of power. The other I'm using two 2s 4000mah LiPo packs and the power is just unstoppable! Until about 4 months ago, the Ofna chrome top starter (10250) boxes were the only ones I used and their power was usually enough. Everyone talked about how heavy they were and I figured it didn't bother me. It didn't, until I got the 10244 and realized just how light a starter box could be! The 10244 is easy and fast to set up to any chassis, light weight, and as powerful as anyone could hope for. Price is a little high, but to me, it's worth it. :D

OK - you guys are very quick with the replies. Thank you to everyone for the responses.
Well I could not hold back the urge to buy, and after looking at almost every box there is : I decided to go with the OFNA - OFN10244 truggy box.
I was really tempted by the whole power panel w/ glow igniter option on the crome top boxes - but the power panel can not handle Lipo packs and it was my plan to use Lipo from the git go - so that was out.
The Kyosho starter box looked really good as well, and the price was right, but went with the OFNA truggy box for the 775 motors.
PS - say No to Himoto ! - LOL - but seriously; for the price it's a good frame just couldn't find one that had the rubber wheel that rotated straight and true.
I am replacing the Tamiya plugs with Deans connectors and installing a Protek 4s 14.8v / 2100mAh Lipo pack.
My plan is to install 2 of these packs ( you only use 1 at a time- but if it starts to go dead you can simply plug in the backup one ) Just gotta save up some $ for the backup batt.
Some soldering of the connectors and I will be good to go. Should look sweet with some Nitro Addicts stickers on the side too
I will report back on how the box does ( should be awesome ) and more importantly how the Lipo pack works out .
Keep the replies comming - I still want to hear what everybody has used and what their thoughts are.

I running theh big blue Duratrax(yes Duratrax LOL) with the single 12 volt motor. I rewired it using 12 ga racers edge wire and it is BAD ASS!I also added a togle switch and alligator clips to be able to use the battery under the hood of my truck. This alone was the main reason I wanted a 12v starter box. Ill never be caught with a dead starterbox. If the gel cell in it dies, flip the toggle and hook it up under the hood.
Guys with Moogens that have had to use it, love it and always ask."what kind is it". One more thing, this thing dosent even crack a sweat when trying to start any new Nova based engines during break in period. That alone is saying alot, to anyone who has ever had this chore.

Very true. I killed a sportwerks box and this ofna box http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_23_52/products_id/17055 breaking in a P5x...the 10246 fired it up cold.

That's the box with 1 X Protek 4s 14.8v / 2100mAh Lipo pack. It has tons of starting power with this battery and only weighs 4lb-15oz with 2 of those batteries in it ( one to use and one for backup ) . I used it a bit over the weekend and it has awesome starting power.

Gonna regurgitate an old thread to add, I bought this exact box from scoob with the batteries and have tortured it being my first box, I have broken in two motors since I have had it, one being a Nova and it is still going strong. It is a little heavy but my pit guy usually carries it and my fuel bottle.
next thing ya know you all will be rolling them 4 wheel garden carts to the pit lane :blbl: actually I have one and have thought about it :D
Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself.

LOL!!! That box is bomb proof dude...I have kicked myself a few times for getting rid of it, but I know it has a good home now :)
If you think that box is heavy, try lugging the big blue chrome top ofna box, with a 12v gel cell...TANK!!!
