How can you improve the highest performance RTR truck?

By creating a kit version! And that's exactly what HPI have done.

The highest performance RTR truck - the HPI Hellfire with its awesome handling and outstanding performance straight out of the box is now available as an unassembled version - the Hellfire SS!

For experienced R/C modellers, the satisfaction of building a kit is a big part of what makes the hobby fun. Assembling a kit from scratch also allows the Hellfire SS owner to build the kit to their exact specifications and customize the truck by adding any option parts.

Since many drivers already have advanced radio systems that are perfect for the Hellfire SS and they also prefer to use their own choice of engine. The Hellfire SS comes without an engine and radio gear, which helps to lower the price so more high performance hop-up parts can be added to the kit and still keep the overall price of the truck low.

Simply put, SS kits are fast, fun, high spec, and even price-conscious!

To give the Hellfire SS kit the extra competitive edge it comes with heavy duty option parts as standard equipment. For a full spec list see the detailed "Hellfire up close" at the bottom of this page.

The Hellfire SS kit is the highest spec car HPI has ever made. The quality of all parts and the material used will just make building and running this car a fantastic experience.

Well, Don't belive the hype. It's turn out to be just an OK truck with a lot of options that break.
I've seen two guys run them for a few raecs......THey both now have CRT's.

the hellfire is a great truck once the needed mods and fixes have been done. it is definately not for newbies or people that dont like to work on thier trucks though. hpi did miss on this one, especially on the rtr. that is what i originally bought. i have hopped the hell out of it but am frustrated that i had to do that just to get it competitive. it now huals ass on the track but i want something else.(i just ordered the mugen mbx5t prospec). i'm either going to part out my hellfire or sell it to somebody with everything for a good price. maybe i'll give it to my son, who knows i'm not quite sure yet....

What did you have to change on it?

first and foremost, the stock chassis doesnt do it any justice. i changed to a bce chassis. next ,speedtech cf upper chassis plate, diff plate, chassis braces , sterring ackerman, brake disks, hingepin holders. gh aluminum knuckels all the way around. new racing berings. gpm titanium sterring turnbuckels. had to buy a wing mount kit for it. kmw lsp adapters for the front cvd's, the stock have a bunch of slop. titanium hingepins. modified radio box. kyosho o-rings for the diffs. kmw bacplate for the motor, modified the internals of the stock motor. they didnt line up with the porting of the sleeve.there was a tonne of things i did just to make it turn better. i had the original rtr of course. the ss is a better option but still is lacking. once i did all this it was better on th etrack but still needed something. could never quite figure it out. it would change all the time. just a weird driving experience. from the start of a 45 minute main to the finish it would drive cery different. very unconsistant. anyway if you are willing to spend the time and make all the mods, it is competitive. but mugen is competitive right ouot of the box. mmmmmm, mugen mbx5t prospec. sitting in the mail somewhere waiting to get my grubby little hands on it.

on a side note. if you want any parts for a hellfire i have a tonne of them for sale. whatever you want just ask, i have it for sure. arms diffs, etc....

Thanks for the info about the Hellfire. I am just getting into RC and was looking at the Hellfire to supplement the RC10GT RTR that I got for Father's Day this year. Tod of RC Compound had told me that the Hellfires that he had sold had some issues and when he called HPI (not a toll free call) he was on hold for two hours.
Like you I am now looking at the MBX5T Prospec as a new vehicle.

I’ve been reading a lot in various forums about the hellfire SS and can hardly find 1 good comment about the truggy. There is a guy at my local tracks that runs the SS and it seems to work great for him, also in a recent R/C Car mag they gave the SS a great review. So is all the SS bashing really warranted or is it just cause it is a HPI and not(kyosho, mugen, jamming, losi, thunder tiger, etc).

YA I to bought the hellfire rtr and found to give me problems as well. It wasn't till some upgades that it would be able to keep the same performance as the jammin. I was going to sell it after this season to get a jammin but after seeing the mugen in action I'm set on getting one of those instead. I guess I'll wait for a bit so I don't jump into the same mistake again. LOL
